On the 25th of September 2014 the European Commission (EC) has notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) a revision to the lead limit in Annex II under the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC (TSD). The EU proposes to adopt the amendment in the first quarter of 2015, with it coming into force in the third quarter of 2016.

On the 21st of December 2016 a new toy safety standard EN71-12:2016 was published by the EU. Compared with the old one, the new standard has changed a lot and is stricter. It supersedes EN 71-12:2013 which will be withdrawn. This amendment was approved on the 30th of October 2016 and will come into force in June
From the 5th of September to the 9th of October a total of 56 products were recalled in the EU these were made up of 53 toys and 3 juvenile products. The countries of origin are 1 product is from Vietnam, 1 product came from Belgium, 2 products came from Germany, the remaining 52 products all came from China.
From the 31st to 35th week of 2016 a total of 45 toys were recalled in the EU this figure is made up of 42 toys and 3 juvenile products. The numbers and countries of origin are: 1 from Bulgaria 1 from Hong Kong 1 from France 1 product’s country of origin is unknown The remaining 41 products all came from China.
