RECALL CASES ANALYSIS OF APPAREL AND FOOTWEAR MARCH 2016

European Union

EU RAPEX systems notified 20 cases in which 50% were notified because of Injuries hazards. These 10 batch of Children’s clothes were recalled because they not comply with the relevant European standard EN 14682. Some parts of the clothes could pose a risk of strangulation to children because they can be wrapped around the child’s neck.

One batch of Ladies’ lederhoses does not comply with the REACH regulation. The amount of Chromium (VI) found in the leather is too high. Chromium (VI) is sensitising and may trigger allergic reactions.

One batch of Children’s tracksuits were recalled because of chemical, Strangulation and injuries hazards. The product contains azo-dyes releasing the aromatic amines 3,3-dimethoxybenzidine and benzidine. When the product is in direct and prolonged contact with the skin, this aromatic amine may be absorbed by the skin. Aromatic amines can cause cancer, cell mutations and affect reproduction.

The drawstrings in the hood and in the waist area of the tracksuit may become trapped during various activities of the child, leading to strangulation or injuries. The product does not comply with the REACH Regulation and with the relevant European standard EN 14682.

2 batches of Gloves were recalled because the gloves contain azo-dyes which release the aromatic amines benzidine and 3,3-Dimethoxybenzidine. The product does not comply with the REACH Regulation.

3 batches of Women’s shoes did not comply with the REACH Regulation. These products were recalled because the amount of Chromium (VI) in the leather parts of the shoes being too high. Chromium (VI) is sensitising and may trigger allergic reactions.

One batch of Girls’ sandals were recalled because the decorative flowers come off easily. A child could put them in the mouth and choke. The product does not comply with the relevant national standard UNE 40902.

One batch of False nails do not comply with the Cosmetic Products Regulation. The glue contains dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which is toxic to reproduction.

One batch of Women’s leather gloves were recalled because the amount of chromium (VI) in the leather is too high. The product does not comply with the requirements of the REACH Regulation.

One batch of Leather purses were recalled because they do not comply with the REACH Regulation. The amount of Chromium (VI) in the leather is too high.

America

CPSC recalled one batch of Children’s footed pajamas, because the products fail to meet the federal flammability standards for children’s sleepwear, posing a risk of burn injuries to children.

Canada

One batch of Baby Boy Sailor Dog Sleep and Play Layettes and one batch of Baby Girl Bunny Print Sleep and Play Layettes were recalled. The 3-D decorative dog and bunny ears attached to the feet extend beyond 6 mm from the point of attachment and do not meet the flammability requirements for tight-fitting children’s sleepwear under Canadian law.
